It's possible to get on the incorrect installation track when installing EndNote on a Mac, which will result in a 'Product Key is Invalid' error. The following screenshots are from version X7, but it's been possible from previous versions, and will probably be possible in future versions.
When you double-click the downloaded .dmg, this is what the mounted disk image displays:
At this point, you should drag the EndNote icon as indicated, locate EndNote in the Finder on your Mac, and run it. If you ignore the instructions and double-click the EndNote X7 icon, thereby launching EndNote from the mounted disk image, you will see this:
If you ignore that warning, click 'Continue,' and enter your key, you will see this:
The solution is to cancel out of the application, drag the EndNote icon to the Applications folder, and then launch it from the Finder.

The product key should load automatically once you load the files. If asked for a product key you will need to reinstall and ensure all files have been extracted or unzipped.
To download files please check the hardware requirements for your computer then click on the appropriate file.
- EndNote X6 for PC: If you are loading X6 for PC you will need to upzip the files into a new folder on your hard drive then load the software from the new folder (this is very important or the product key will not load).
- EndNote X7 for PC: If you are loading X7 for PC you will need to download both the installation and product key files into a folder, then run the installation file to install it. You don't need to open the other file.
- EndNote X6 or X7 for MAC: You will only need to download and run the one file.
